What can I say – Lately I have been stuck in a sunshine state. Now I wish I was speaking of Florida. I could use a warm, sandy vacation. However, I am speaking of the mind. This time of year, especially after we have had a taste of spring as we did a few weeks ago, I crave anything that will break me out of the damp gloom that envelops us. My 2011 cure is to include some good-old-fashioned sunshine yellow in my life. I simply crave a touch of the warm color everyday to break the monotony of grey skies around us.
I find this a little funny because until a few years ago, I was not really a big fan of the color. In fact I remember thinking of it as an “icky” color. Through helping customers in the shop, it is my daily observation that many people feel the same way. Due to my recent love affair with the color I beg the question “why does yellow seem to have a bad wrap?” On a whim I decided to look up “yellow” on Wikipedia to see what informational tidbits would turn up. Oddly enough, I think I may have found a clue. Throughout history the color has been coupled with all sorts of undesirable partners. It has represented conflict and rebellion to distorted journalism and everything in between. Could it be that all of this negative representation has filtered into our subconscious and altered the way many of us perceive this hue? Or is it simply that many people find it to be too bold to wear or that it may not “go with” their skin tone. I’m not sure of the answer, but I think it is high time some of us rejuvenate our perception of this color.
After I started wearing small pops of yellow, I began to notice that it somehow brightened my mood as well as some of the people around me. They would smile a little more than usual, and talk about happy things and the thought of Spring. I urge you to give it a try, the result may be surprising. You may see that it is like bringing a little ray of sunshine everywhere you go.
I made a slide show that highlights a few items I have around the shop. You should at least try something yellow on next time you are in. See if makes you smile. I’m determined to give this innocent color a new lease on life and free it from the poor reputation it has fallen victim to over the centuries. Would you like to join me??
